Hi my name is Gem,

         

I am a ‘hot chick’ 11 year old chestnut mare living in Summerveld, Durban. Yes, of course, I’m an ex-race horse..my racing name was Thief of Hearts and I left some of those geldings standing, let me tell you! After my racing days I lived with Bianca Roberts, who introduced me to show jumping …What a ball! I love the show atmosphere and all that showing off…I enjoy jumping the best, though I don’t have much time for all the flatwork stuff we have to do at home …gimme a straight to gallop or a jump and I’m away.

Kylie came into my life in 2007. She is very patient with me. Yes I can get a little fussy sometimes..especially at supper time…but Hey!.. I am a chestnut mare…and full of attitude!

We began working using parelli methods and join-up because I used to get a little flustered, especially when people did up my girth… ooh! Oh yes, and on outrides too, when the wind blew through the trees ..Ugh!

I have to say I was a little surprised at all Kylies strange antics at first, after all, she is perhaps the first human that has actually tried to talk to me in my language. Personally I think Equis should be an official language too but we horses understand you people well enough, I guess!

Anyway…I soon realised that this was going to be fun. Two years later and I trust Kylie completely. I’ll even let her walk right underneath me.

In fact, between you & me, I think of her as ‘my little foal’ and will let her do anything…Even I have to admit, I’ve trained her very well! 

I have to say, though, I still don’t like it much when she makes me run around the lunge ring, so I kick up my heels just a bit..just to keep her on her toes. But we always have fun and I will follow Kylie anywhere! Well …of course!…If I work well she gives me carrots. Who wouldn’t! Come to think of it, with her patience and my attitude we really do make a great team!
