In our attempts to find a junior horse for a friend of ours,
we somehow managed to come across Desert.
We were looking for a large gelding that would jump and apparently
he fits this bill. We were told that he had lost some weight
but did not expect him to be as bad as he was.
When we first saw him he was lying in the corner of the field
and did not appear to want to bother getting up. He was covered
in ticks and bite marks where the other horses had tried to
kill him. He had also apparently jumped a fence, leaving a
nice scar on his front leg. (See the "Before"
pic to the left)
He had been turned out in the veld and when he got out the
horsebox at our stable yard he heaved a bit sigh of relief,
"Ah, civilization at last!"
The first few days he tottered between water trough and
teff net, afraid that if he closed his eyes they would disappear
and he would be back in the veld again.
Now after a month, he is already looking much better.
Although still thin, his coat is starting to shine and his
sores have healed. Our equine therapist suggested that
we start light lunge work and he appears to enjoy it. (See
the "After"pic to the left)
He also enjoys going for walks in hand all over the property
in the bush with his new owner. They run along side by side
jumping over bushes and logs.
It will be a while before he is able to prove whether he
will indeed be the showjumper we were looking for, but at
least he has a new lease on life!
The Show mix has most definitely helped the shiny coat
and there is an increase in weight already. And we give full credit
to the Immune Mix for assisting the bite marks to heal, as
well as ensuring that he did not get tick fever (we filled
half a 500ml cooldrink bottle with ticks off of him).
Regards,
Dawn
