Question:
I have a horse that is fairly sensitive in all ways. He is normally
quite calm and relaxed on outrides, boxing, in the paddock,
and in the arena - as long as he is kept slightly underweight.
As soon as he starts to look like a decent horse he gets strong.
I don't mind this so much in the flat work, but he gets stupid (doesn't
listen) when he starts jumping and this gets quite dangerous
as he has a rather large stride and likes to 'pop' gymnastics with
1 stride distances. He gets quite strong and because he doesn't
like to be touched/ held in the mouth it gets quite 'hairy'.
I would like to know if you think that Calm mix would help as I
would really like to let him get a bit fatter and still keep him
manageable.

Answer:
Dear Concerned Rider,
I can see you have a dilemma. You want a decent looking horse, but
can't feed him too much in case he puts himself and you into danger.
I can see two possible Herbal Horse solutions:
- Show mix - contains fenugreek, which helps the digestive
system work better. So you can keep his feed low and still
maintain condition. Some people have found it useful with
hot horses.
- Calm mix - for me, this is the option more likely to
work. We've had incredible success with this product. And, if
he doesn't need it all of the time, you could feed it just
when you anticipate problems - e.g. a jumping session or show.
Or perhaps a combination of the two? Let me know which option
you feel suits you best.
Follow up after using Calm mix:
2.5 weeks ago (on Friday evening) he was an absolute hooligan,
he has been starting to put on weight (slightly) and it looked
like I was going to have to cut his food again. I had to canter
him for about 25 minutes and ended up just exercising him and not
working him (work was impossible). He had no food that night and
only a handful the next day as we were going to a show. He was OK
for the show, but I don't like not feeding him so I got some
Calm mix on the Sunday.
My instructor rode him on Tuesday and I rode him on the Wednesday
- he was an angel (esp. compared with the previous Friday's
session).
He was a sweetie on the weekend and my next lesson on Wednesday
was very confusing - I had to put my leg on coming into a
fairly technical gymnastic. Normally I would have refused to do
a gymnastic like that, especially as he is not on a diet and it
would have been quite dangerous.
He is definitely quite perky - but most certainly not stupid
any more. I started the tub of Calm mix 2 weeks ago - I am still
a little confused (stunned actually) - it couldn't have made that
much of a difference - could it?
