Last year, the Highveld Horse Care Unit (HHCU) was called out to the property of a so-called "Horse Whisperer". This person had "saved" about 90 horses from the butcher, but had not fed them properly since. Several of the horses were in need of veterinary attention, but the vet did not want to treat them, as he was owed a lot of money.

Amongst these horses was a grey percheron stallion. He was in terrible condition. He also had a piece of wood stuck in his eye, which was bleeding and infected.

The piece of wood was removed following veterinary treatment at the insistence of the HHCU. Hercules, as he was named, was taken to the HHCU.

Slowly, with a lot of love and attention, Hercules has healed. His eye is now completely healthy and he is leading a contented life at the HHCU.

The only thing that bothers Hercules these days is his arthritic limbs, which necessitate him having a daily dose of bute. It is with this problem that The Herbal Horse has decided to help. We have donated Hercules an endless supply of Rejuven mix, and so far, he seems to be reacting very well to it (see pictures below). Bev and Bobbie of the HHCU say he is looking and feeling wonderful. Eventually, we are hoping to wean him off the bute, which can have unpleasant side-effects.
